Graduate and Honours Seminar Course

Background

The Department of Computer Science runs a Colloquium and Seminar Series consisting of presentations and participation by:

• M.Sc. and Ph.D. students enrolled in the CS900 Graduate Seminar course.
• Fourth-year undergraduate honours students enrolled in the CS499 Honours Seminar course.
• Faculty members from the Department and visiting faculty members from other universities.

A student enrolled in CS499 or CS900 is required to make one presentation in the Seminar Series, to attend presentations made by other students in the Seminar Series according to the guidelines provided, and to attend all presentations given by faculty members and visiting faculty members in the Colloquium Series.

First Meeting

All students enrolled in CS499 and CS900 must attend the first scheduled class meeting with the semester's coordinator.

Requirements

You must satisfy the following requirements by the specified deadlines. Failure to meet these deadlines may result in your presentation being cancelled, requiring you to complete your presentation in a subsequent semester. Materials must be submitted to UR Courses.

• Submit Presentation Title and Abstract

  The title of your presentation should be informative and accessible, in 10 words or less. Your abstract should provide a concise summary of the technical content of your presentation in 80-120 words (no more, no less).

  The intended audience for your abstract is the other participants in the Colloquium and Seminar Series (it may be distributed campus-wide and/or off campus to interested parties).

  If you have a research supervisor:

  • they are expected to approve your title and abstract before you submit it on UR Courses.
  • include their name in your submission ("supervised by: Firstname Lastname").

  Points to check (with inspiration from this document ):

  1. Have you identified a topic and scope that can be presented in 18-20 minutes?
  2. Do your title and abstract capture the interest of potential attendees?
  3. Are your title and abstract well-written in terms of language, spelling, and grammar?
  4. Does your title clearly describe the topic being presented? In a way that is inviting? In 10 words or less?
  5. Does your abstract make a clear statement of the topic and the research question, if appropriate?
  6. If presenting research findings, does your abstract say how the research was/is being undertaken?
  7. Does your abstract indicate the value of the presentation for attendees?
