CS831 Research Paper Presentation Outline
Choosing a Paper
Tentatively, it is planned that your oral presentation will be for 40-45 minutes, including discussion. This amount may be adjusted depending on the number of students.
The oral presentation will include either notes on the blackboard (sufficient) or projected transparencies or a Powerpoint presentation (recommended).
The presentation should include in-depth presentation of the mathematical model, algorithm, implementation, complexity analysis, or experiments described in the paper. You are responsible for being able to explain all aspects, including assumptions and mathematical derivations.
Include an example that you have devised yourself in the presentation. THIS MUST BE A NEW EXAMPLE, NOT ONE GIVEN IN THE RESEARCH PAPER. Show step by step how the example works. This must also be included in your written summary.
Your presentation may include criticism of the content of the research paper, but you should not dwell on these issues, unless you have an alternate approach to suggest. Do not spend time criticizing the organization or wording of the paper. If you are unsure of details, attempt to contact the author(s) of the paper for other papers or for clarification. If you do so, be precise in your questions. Also, please send the instructor a copy (cc) of the email and any response.
You may arrange a private "dry run" with the instructor of part or all of your presentation.
A written description in neat typed form of an example that you have created to illustrate the ideas in your research paper, should be distributed to all participants either before or at your presentation. This example must be based on YOUR OWN WORDS and YOUR OWN PICTURES. You should also list crucial definitions. If you copy five or more consecutive words from the paper, they must be in quotation marks ("like this"). You may also refer to other papers related to your paper. To simplify your oral presentation, a list of terminology and formulas may be appended to this summary.
A copy of the research paper, preferably without any extra writing on it, should be distributed to all participants at least one week before the presentation.
