Describe the expected results of the project (980/1000 characters)
The primary result of this project will be to deliver a highly
functional, self-maintaining, accessible, flexible, and usable
information/decision support system. This deliverable will lead to
furthering research and development in many areas addressed by the
project, which include: the evaluation of the conceptual framework for
lifecycle assessments of product choices will aid in understanding the
effectiveness of such tools in consumer decision-making, the evaluation
of the database organization to support query optimization and query
expressiveness will lead to a better understanding of how to improve
future designs, the evaluation of the interface will further
understanding of human-computer interaction design techniques and their
effectiveness in the design and development process, and the evaluation
of the final system will further research in understanding user
decision-making processes and aid in understanding ways to provide users
with more satisfying interactive experiences.
---------------
Describe the planned strategy to disseminate the results of the project
to the target audiences identified (3400/6000 characters)
(Research Community, General Public, Government Policy Makers,
Infrastructure Practitioners)
To disseminate results of this project to the research community the
academic researchers plan to submit research findings resulting from the
project to various peer-reviewed conferences and journals. These will
include submissions to the Journal of Consumer Research (JCR),
Elsevier’s Journal on Environmental Modelling and Software (EMS), the
Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), Graphics
Interface (GI), the ACM Conference on Electronic Commerce (EC), and the
ACM Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM), among others.
The JCR publishes scholarly research articles that describe and explain
consumer behavior spanning fields such as psychology, marketing,
sociology, and economics. Elsevier’s EMS journal publishes research
articles on recent advances in environmental modelling and software. The
CHI and GI conferences focus on research relating to the development of
humane user interfaces for software. The EC conference focuses on the
advancement of electronic commerce, principles and the CIKM conference
focuses on researching new, innovative technologies to support
information and knowledge management as well as recent advances on data
and knowledge bases. The academic researchers have strong records in
accepted works to various journal publications and conferences and hope
to use these submissions as a catalyst to further research and
development within the area.
Throughout the project’s duration, the research team, including academic
researchers and supporting organizations, plan to hold a number of media
events and public workshops on the project. The goal of these events and
workshops will be to inform members of the supporting organizations,
local and national government, infrastructure practitioners, and
interested community members concerning the development and status of
the project, milestones achieved and those still required to be
completed, and the current results obtained. As well, the research team
plans to hold numerous non-media project sessions specifically for
government officials, policy makers, and infrastructure practitioners to
learn about the development of the project and results obtained. With
the assistance of the supporting organizations, the research team will
contact and advertise these sessions to various government officials,
policy makers, and infrastructure practitioners. Sessions will be
planned accordingly based on the times and locations available for these
stakeholders to meet.
Upon completion of the project, the research team will hold a general
local public media event to advertise the pilot system and to inform all
stakeholders concerning the success of the project. Community members
from the general public, local and national government officials and
policy makers, and infrastructure practitioners will be invited to
attend. The event will discuss the project and results obtained as well
as indicate plans for further research and development.
Along with providing the events and sessions as described, upon
completion of the project the research team will draft a document
outlining the various stages of the project, results obtained, and
future work. The final project document will be distributed online, by
placing the document on the web pages of the University of Regina and
supporting organizations. It will also be made available for
distribution offline.
