Books I've read

This list is not complete by any means. I've read and forgotten many books. Some I choose not to list. Others would be better suited to a list of beginner readers. What children's books I list here I think adults could possibly enjoy, even if they are not the intended audience. The same cannot, unfortunately, be said of the books intended for adults.

All I can do for you is list books I've read. I'd give reviews, but they would be utterly useless. My tastes change over time, and often differ with my mood. I sometimes wonder whether I've abandoned some favorite authors unfairly, but then I get over it because there's always so much else to read by so many other interesting people.

Unoriginal Works

These are series or collections of books by multiple authors. I say unoriginal only because they necessitate the creation of and adherance to a fictional world by all the authors. This removes some of the originality from the authors' work. Even where only one author is credited on these books, they are ultimately collaborations between the series' creators and all previous authors in the series. Listing the author's names is therefore pointless. I have included some religious volumes here because they share some of that nature, either being transcribed words of God, or compiled works of several authors.

Being in this category is not a condemnation of any of these books. Perhaps that's why I've put The Bible here, to lift the curse associated with being a book in a series. Some of them are necessarily limited by their subject matter and make poor reads. Some of them transcend their subject matter and tell great stories and touch important themes. Others are Plain Old Junk.

The Holy Bible, King James Version

The Book of Mormon

The Doctrine and Covenants

The Pearl of Great Price

Star Trek Universe

Star Wars Universe

Dungeons and Dragons

Original Works

Here I include both fiction and nonfiction. Science Fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, speculative fiction, fiction fiction, history, books on writing, readable science fact, but never textbooks unless they are amazingly good reads (the only thing resembling a review here).

Isaac Asimov

Robert Heinlein

Larry Niven

Anne McCaffrey

Orson Scott Card

L. E. Modesitt, Jr

L. E. is not a woman (Elly) writing as a man. He is a modern author. One would hope that in a time where there are many successful female SF authors (Vonda McIntyre, Octavia Butler, Anne McCaffrey to name a few) no woman would still feel the need to hide her gender to be successful.

Octavia Butler

Roddy Doyle

Anne Rice

William Gibson

Stephen King

Roger Zelazny

  • Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming
  • Piers Anthony
