Mindo Cloud Forest Preserve - 2002

The lodge we stayed at was about a half-hour walk from the village of Mindo. Although the lodge was up along the hillside, it had all the conveniences including hot showers in the cabins and a big dining room beside the pool.

Because it generally rained in the afternoons, we went on our excursions in the mornings and did our classes in the afternoons. It was great having classes on an outdoor covered deck, as long as we kept the Off handy for mosquitoes. Other companions were the pretty little hummingbirds that flitted in and around in search of nectar from the many flowers.

One of our biggest excursions was a hike up the mountainside to a big waterfall. We hiked up a rough road for a couple of hours and then got to a narrow path down into a gorge where the river had cut through the stone mountainside over the ages. The path was narrow and steep so I was glad many times of the helping hand offered by our guide.

We had three other great excursions at Mindo: the Butterfly Farm, the white water rafting on the river, and the visit to the Orchid Farm. Click on the pictures below to see more pictures of those excursions.
