  • Before we. get started today. Sure, only one person. yeah just one. In each group. Summer hosted. And all gets more. Vision test, yes I failed. At JP. rock. towards being the Semester talked about. Climate change is a computing problem. Say that climate change is resolved. By.
  • computers.
  • But is there. A role. For computer professionals to play. In addressing. The climate emergency. Maybe. it's it's too.
  • Hot sufficiently.
  • It doesn't indicate emergency USA is there a role.
  • For.
  • me to be more definite.
  • and say.
  • What is. In three years. So I was looking for comments from the chat and. seems like. Get. stuck here. So I believe the assignment description gives you a word count if you're writing a document. So that's the answer to the question in the chat. made a comment earlier today and some grades have been posted others will be forthcoming. Okay. So. This question clear. We have a discussion about that. Okay, so. say. That. So, as you begin. To understand, with more clarity. what's going on. messages are becoming more clear, but not to say they weren't problems over the past me not so long ago. So in the 70s. There was part of a. Pilot cooling. So that as. We understand that one CD after you've had. Some of the hardest years on record and. Say that. Producing accurate predictions or modeling. and making that accessible. contribution for computer professionals. discussion. I just want to say that. it's got to. Design software is which are friendly and reduce the emissions that we are having. A car car carbon dioxide emissions from.
  • From.
  • Other time devices, etc, we do, but rather than professional. Decisions are the. initiative should be tainted by higher qualities, because they would be much more effective in reducing. in reducing the damage that we are passing.
  • Thanks.
  • positive and proactive approach. Or is there a way for us. to design.
  • I think it's important for us as computer professionals i'm coming from more of a geological perspective, taking a class in geology and we had a discussion about climate change. When we talk about climate change, we need to focus more on the timescales, because its climate has been changing shifting from glaciation to de icing and all. it's happening, and when we say glaciers are melting they have been melting from not from like last 10 or 20 years but they've been melting from last 1500 200 1500 to 2000 years ago, or more than that. So I think. Our duty as computer professionals is more to focus on the data, the scientific data that accurate data that that's collected through research, rather than following the hoax news for the climate change. I think that's more important for us to make sure accurate information is being presented out.
  • So. that's that's more. That we can. Take on it's something. that's definitely. give in, or we do not speak. You heard this phrase that information wants to be free. or something like that. Less. Last quote. Recording this i'm paraphrasing yet. Was was to be free. So this is nice. Stewart brand. So wants to be free, in the sense that it's easier to disseminate information. Share file. Something. But on the other hand. Information also expensive because soluble. So the intellectual property behind. Say coronavirus 19 vaccines or any number of other things, certain aspects of the Amazon shop store platform. Valuable things.
  • Are.
  • The systems that which you're working are designed to. Be as soon as value. heard about five star link building data. 10 burners leave. here with me. zoom. yeah so. Documents words. When data. You put it onto the Web in some format, so the word document or excel spreadsheet. Then they give us one star. let's say one star for on the web, maybe it's a PDF file. Working with csv files. Who knows what a csv file it's. yeah. So. There wasn't a standard to begin with, but standards have. come along to support. CSP offering the CSP class. format. format, you know the good open data format like this to ensure out. sort of subscription framework. descriptions. So, on five stars. So five star when data. Is data landed a non proprietary format that uses. That describes relationships, creating. Data elements. Using you are fewer eyes. You know, former source indicators for everything. And we also linked. to other concepts using that format to get. To get to the weather data. So. it's a scheme to represent the openness of data. So up to three stars then we're talking about making it open and then.
  • If.
  • We have a data source to gets four or five stars. Then we're linking it. with other with other collections of data, so the data that's wiki data, for example. up. lots of other sources of. data that we can refer. boy he made interfaces. So can we talk about your name, in a sense. text file like CS comma separated values but it's easy, but maybe understanding the data that's stored there is not so easy. notes. I think that was a stone pain for my shoe that I flicked just the right way that. They may be attributed to much to my. yeah. We talked about the Corbett at. Johns Hopkins University. What kind of formats you think that date, is it. So just because we have a date on the web doesn't mean that it's accessible. it's not. So if we understand what data is and where it comes from and how it compares to other similar data so we're comparing apples to apples, for example. These are. Important ways. So if we have and we have. tasks in mind. People you know accomplish. So the the whole discussion of the semantic web and printed on the bed in. machine readable formats, so if we need name things with URLs and. links to other websites for more context that's helpful for people to get in more information. And so, and it's also helpful for. Software to understand the deal it's on the web and to follow those links and suck. automatically programs. So the current state of the art. In this in data needs to also dress usability. question about. Is there a way to represent data. So that we can have informed debates. And we can agree on. The serious nature of the task ahead of us. can still disagree about the best way to handle it. We have solid data that we can agree on. And that's maybe a good first step. So there's this thinking about another. issue of data. and misinformation. So we might not at this point, we might not all agree on. Change the climate. well. there's maybe a contribution they can make us looking at. platforms that. reside on computer systems in computer networks. creations of computer professionals or programmers. And look and see what. We can do to. restore trust in institutions. and ideas that are so regularly under attack. So. make sense, so what is the single most important contribution you can make to society as a computer professional. So how many of you have thought about that question in some form or the other, or another. As you began your studies in computer science, or you thought computer science was a ways that you could make a car, make a difference in the world. So that's. Our tree so. How many of you are thinking about becoming an acm or kips Member as a starting point in your journey. So for the link on a boat some information for kips. An acm as well. nice to have an acm student chapter yeah. undergraduate. I was just yesterday. Suddenly the summer. So maybe we can. start that again. Okay. So one comment frank Amir. So, increasing the quality around us. So sometimes that's expresses the. versace and inclusion. Diversity equity and inclusion. I think. The in the credits are. For most people. Anything else comes to mind. Okay well we're almost at a time. So people and there. and Thursday we'll talk about things, in general terms of what we've done over the Semester. That sound like a plan. office hour or so after I get my. line to get my coffee right away and. see me in person or on zoom, if you like. Saying. Thank you everyone. Have a good day take care and see you on Thursday.
  • hello, Professor.
  • hi.
  • I just have one question like in this final project so like how many pages can like approximately 1012.
  • So. They said in class there's if you're writing something there's a. ballpark for the. The target for the fake we're account, let me just access it.
  • Because I was just confused about the approximately words or PhD. What is a minimum or maximum page limit. So I can start working on it so.
  • Sure there's some comment about page or cat.
  • or because I didn't find in this like in particular section right below so I thought I should ask me for that thing. In the blog limit, I saw that there was. 902,000 yeah.
  • yeah. Let me check in my office and join me in my APP. Is our.
  • To them, just going forward.
  • hey can you send me an email.
  • That would be.
  • Okay, and i'll do that this morning.
  • yeah perfect no worries Thank you yeah. bye.
  • bye.

Responses

The most important thing that I encountered:

  • We asked questions about the humaness of linked open data and learned that the usability of it is challenged as the progress to improving it has been slow
  • About Tim Berners-Lee, father of Web. Berner is a Computer Scientist who invented the revolutionizing World Wide Web.
  • Politics and science dont mix
  • The most important thing i learned today was the role computer science professionals play in limiting climate change.  For example, we can produce accurate predictions and modeling and make that accessible.  We can facilitate the production of green technology (how much is invented these days without being designed on computer software?)
  • "Fake News" didn't begin on the last 5 years. The single most important contribution I can make in the society as a computing professional is to make the world more equality.
  • At the end of the class, we discussed what would be single contribution we, as computer professionals, can make in the society. I think if we devote our energy and resources towards the greater public good and develop new ideas, inventions, creative works, and computing artifacts that create value for society.
  • Today we talked about IPCC's report that the emission will peak by 2025. With that, we also briefly discussed climate change. For instance, what is the role played by computer professionals, is there a climate emergency, and about communication. Furthermore, Dr. Hepting quickly went over Tim Berners-Lee's 5-star Linked Open data. The first three in the list are open and the remaining two are linked. Lastly, we talked about data quality and trust.
  • Becoming an ACM or CWS is the single most important contribution you can make in the society as a computing professional
  • The most important thing that I learned is about the 5 star linked data. It is important to know how it progressed and what makes something have a higher star value.
  • I found the five stars of Linked Open data to be very interesting. It's a concept that I have not heard about before, and it is one that can be easily applied to any website you visit or create. It provides a good framework for what should be expected from a website on top of W3C conventions.
  • Tobacco companies knew about the health impact of smoking due to their own research and yet they chose to hide these findings.
  • Tim Berners-Lee was the father of the World Wide Web as well as coming up with the 5-star linked open data deployment scheme
  • Although it is true that "fake news" didn't just begin in recent years, I think that the most efficient way to spread good data quality and trust between the internet is that we ALL have to mutually agree to provide and spread the truth (good info). Because what is hate posts/crime or fake news going to benefit us all? I believe social media platforms should either create a block chain for the misinterpreting posts and the hate crime towards others.
  • I learnt that we cannot control whether or not a person will mistrust a piece of information / data. Perhaps one can manage it a little by trying to show that the source can be trusted / has good intentions, but there will still be uncertainty among many, no matter how much one tries. However, that doesn't mean one should give up on building trust. Companies especially should be as honest and transparent as possible in order to be trustworthy. People want to see all elements of a certain reality.
  • I found today’s discussion on climate change interesting and in my opinion from a geological perspective, it is crucial to include timescales are important when discussing climate change in Earth’s history because Earth has been undergoing climatic changes such as from glaciation to deglaciation since its formation. It is our duty as computing professionals to focus on the quality of information being shared on social media platforms to tackle misleading and false information from creating hoax news.
  • Today we discussed about the role to be played as computing professionals and discussed about climate emergency . We also discuss about its linked open data humane? and we discussed its support in our human frailties. We discussed about the contribution we can make as computing professional.
  • A lot of information nowadays is forged
  • During the lecture today, we discussed
  • Today I learned that Tim Berners- Lee is the father of the World Wide Web. I would like to know more about how he came up with that name for it.
  • Today I learned that there a major problem in the information society due to verification of news. The prevalence of fake news has created doubt when faced with authentic news. Perpetrators of violent or criminal acts (governments) now brand every news that does not fit their agenda as fake news. It then turns to a word-of-mouth event. For example, Russia are claiming the evidence presented for the war crimes against Ukraine are fake.
  • In todays lecture we discussed about the topic
  • In today's class we have discussed about IPCC report, What is the role to be played? by computer professionals? Is there climate emergency? as well as COVID data managed by JHN and what formats do they have?
  • As a computer scientist, after the lecture today, I realized that I haven't contributed to the world anything. My goal is become a skilled developer with a big heart.
  • today we talk about Linked open data has more promise but you fill find several dead ends to link trails thar seemed promising, Fear, uncertainty, doubt campaign waged by Microsoft against open/ free software (reference needed)
  • Today I attended in person after a long time . It was amazing and interesting to be back. Saw the prof after a long time and enjoyed to learned with him!
  • Tim Berner Lee is the father of the World Wide Web. He also distributed data according to their sensitivity using stats which I found out to be very intriguing. Thinking about more ways through which we can improve the world.
  • More education is needed in today's world to understand where misinformation comes from and how to combat it.
  • Today the meeting started with the attendance and after that we talked about ‘New IPCC Report’ which claims emission must peak by 2025. We also discussed about what is the role to be played by computer professionals. And questions whether there is a climate emergency and that the message has been communicated effectively or consistently in the past.
  • the role of computer profesinal is to deliver the important information constantly to society
  • In todays class, we discussed about the group assignment submission and we also discussed about ipcc report. We also spoke about 5 star linked data
  • the most important thing I have learned today in class is about Linked open data has more promise but you fill find several dead ends to link trails that seemed promising. Data Quality and Trust do not go hand in hand with "Fake News" as it didn't begin on the last 5 years. For example, Tobacco companies hiding their own research about health impacts of smoking
  • Combating fake news means bringing principles and standards from outside the public dialogue into the public dialogue. Originally, the power to judge whether speech is true or false lies in the hands of each citizen. It is up to each citizen to judge whether a piece of content is fake news or not. This is a freedom that citizens have acquired through reason, but it is also a responsibility that they must assume. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
  • i think more important ting for the Data quality if depend on human, actually many news truth but they only reports the part that they wants the reader know and what will influence on how reader feel about the news.

The most difficult thing for me to understand:

  • The lecture due to audio lag and cutting
  • I am still confused about the final exam and final project report.

The thing about which I would most like to know more:

  • the thing about which I would most like to know more is how does data support our human frailties
  • Today the main focus was on the quality if the data shared over social media. It is noticed that the news shared is fake which are generated to make some content. I would like to know more about the nature of humans that get influemced by fake news.
  • Does efficiency in algorithms make any meaningful impact on electricity usage?
  • The thing from today's lecture that I would most like to know more about is data quality and trust. What caused the significant rise in "fake news" over the past 5 years. Was this a thing for a long time but it just went unnoticed. Do companies such as big tobacco get held accountable for hiding the research about the negative health impacts of smoking. How can we enforce laws to prevent "fake news".
  • Today was the first time I had heard the phrase 5 star linked data. The first thing I did after class was looked this term up to find out more about it. Thankfully someone put an informative link in the class discord for that term!
  • today we talked about climate change and how it is related to a computer professional. I think it is effecting computer sector in many ways. I would like to know more about how it is effecting Infrastructure administration. Cloud is the best Option?
  • I would like to learn more on the topic of computing professionals making positive contributions in society. What computer jobs make the most positive difference in society?
  • I want to know more about if the linked open data is humane and also what is the most crucial contribution of us as computing professionals in our society?
  • I wan to know more about how data is stored and how that impacts privacy and data security day to to day for people and users of the internet.
  • TECHNOLOGY IMPACTS ON CLIMATE CHANGE
  • We talked about linked open data and we talked about whether it was safe. And we talked about fake news. We talked about how we could do it to increase reliability.
  • We talked about a lot of things one of which is about climate crisis, I agree with some of my classmate comments in the chat that with today's technology, experts could create new technologies that could help the climate crisis. They have created technologies that could save lives in hospitals, surely they can also create one to save climate?
  • Is what will be on our final exam.
  • I have always been curious about the stuff related to cyber crime. Nowadays, we use advanced security to prevent such incidents from taking place, but still we are unable to stop their occurrence completely. In order to break this kind of security, the crime committers need to be proficient, who possess extreme expertise in the computer science field. The question also arises that why would such intelligent people choose to commit crime?
  • How computer science professionals can help in the climate crisis. Other methods than more accurate models to predict data.
  • Marking criteria of the project delivery
  • I would like to know more about the data stars and how they can be made to be more humane for people to use them. I would also like to know more about different examples id five stars that work well.
  • The thing which I would like to know more will be role of computer professional in climate change through analyzing the data (data scientist) and focusing the idea and promoting in social media
  • How can we make linked-open data more humane and accessible? It's clear that it is the best way for data to be presented however that doesn't mean it will always be accessible. Is there a way to ensure guidelines are followed when posting information?
  • I would like to know more about our final exam.
