  • All right Hello
  • How's everyone today
  • so I want to underscore the word preliminary or emphasize that or
  • underscore is emphasizing limitary
  • Okay so I said I would give you grades today I have we'll see
  • this suddenly change go up but these are the results from the
  • scanning drawings
  • so those are there so the other thing was about the camera we
  • talked about this camera and I don't know if there's another
  • one
  • so what does that sign mean to you attention cameras
  • operational during this exam period
  • seemed like it's on now
  • we turned it on, we turned it on.
  • Are you able to turn it on?
  • No
  • I can. I went. So I asked what was formerly known as ad
  • services. We'll have the camera because I thought this would be
  • a good thing to turn on during the exam. One of the rumors back
  • almost to capacity. They said no, we don't do those cameras.
  • We have to talk to Protective Services, which is the new name
  • for campus security. So I made some inquiries there and let's
  • see what we can do with him.
  • would ask how to request to be turned on for exams can I see a
  • sample of the video
  • learn that it's always on for safety reasons so
  • no fly became agitated because of my frustration with you our
  • courses groups
  • and you were worried for your safety cameras they're being
  • monitored at protective services
  • so the reason I mentioned your courses or groups it was not
  • straightforward
  • to take the individual groups and put them together I thought
  • after a while I would become better at it
  • it's missing a button or two I think maybe combine groups
  • anyway you don't have to worry about that. So is there anyone
  • who submitted assignment one for the infographic
  • Yeah, I know last people submitted where you indicate
  • your group on your submission but you haven't set it up and
  • you haven't indicated through me working horses to set up set it
  • up with your horses so if anyone indicated your group only in the
  • submission send me a note so I can set it up in your courses
  • because I will make it go more smoothly.
  • So I don't want to think that you're not safe here with me I
  • don't want to even raise that possibility.
  • Sure you the policy for filming on campus or the closed circuit
  • TV policy
  • So here's the policy to which I was referred by Protective
  • Services
  • installation use of video surveillance systems
  • see if we have questions about the camera after skimming this
  • policy describes it so describes acceptable installation and use
  • of video surveillance and view of our cameras can provide a
  • visual deterrent to crime right protection of people and
  • property assistant overall security and increase the
  • likelihood of identifications of persons who made reach
  • university policies and or committed crimes
  • so they don't mention academic misconduct in particular but
  • that would fall under the identifications of persons who
  • may breach university policies
  • video surveillance equipment view a bar to assist in efforts
  • to maintain the personal safety of students and staff on the
  • public university campuses to assist with the application of
  • university policies with regard to university property and the
  • Property Brothers to provide a visual deterrent to crime to
  • increase the length
  • to assist in practice okay personal information contained
  • on the recording shall not be used or disclosed for purposes
  • other than describing this policy cetera
  • so senior administrators or designee will have access to
  • view any video surveillance information available for that
  • area only for the purposes which supported the installation
  • so the answer I've asked protective services when I asked
  • whether there is video of the town whether they say that you
  • told me that request has to come from the dean's office so we're
  • very protective of that video which is reasonable.
  • Should feel safe that protective services is rigged protecting
  • the surveillance footage but.
  • There or if there should be a way to say exams in this room
  • are going to be recorded and made available to the instructor
  • for review
  • so this is it's actually more of a cabinet installation than the
  • news service services is more interested in crimes deaths and
  • so on
  • well
  • maybe if you're interested in this then
  • there anyone else on campus
  • yes
  • so I just did a question booklet
  • was for today it looks like there were no questions posted
  • or not getting marked off it was just not counted.
  • I will add I will make the quiz available I will get to quizzes
  • and seven one next day
  • thinking about besides being being new and managing groups I
  • thought let people focus on getting the assignments sorted
  • out first.
  • Anyway,
  • So I thought maybe we have a group discussion on this topic
  • that question what does it mean to be a sustainable practitioner
  • or professional
  • that's a good question Is that clear enough
  • Okay shall we begin
  • What's Up All right
  • thanks is obviously
  • Better
  • you showing up last last year for extra set up See you soon
  • babies
  • you seen some trends point is
  • yours next section
  • I suppose that's all so, yes sir I
  • literally put them underneath the TV
  • you ever
  • seen
  • for watching
  • day to the fact that summer has
  • blossomed philosophers call strategist also suffers
  • from
  • really freaked
  • out get an edge and being able
  • to branch out
  • this
  • video basic is sense
  • like they were
  • like
  • there was like to be seen as
  • a failure for all the rest
  • so glad you're here Good to
  • see you
  • for more discussion continue for a few minutes
  • okay I want to do three more minutes and then last session
  • see there's
  • a lot of police
  • officers
  • morning I am live here noticed
  • is definitely I like
  • to do exactly what it was
  • just like
  • this segments
  • for us
  • trying to get around these organizations are also making a
  • huge loss just because he
  • or she can't
  • possibly
  • together me thoughts about what it means to be a sustainable
  • practitioner or professional
  • brand officer obsolescence
  • All right obsolescence I don't think so correct well I'm not
  • sure that it's spelled correctly so the idea is we also design
  • products to be
  • exposed to yours iPhones or other smartphones it's very
  • attractive to think about getting the latest and greatest
  • technology but the frustrating so I'm on this treadmill is
  • updating phones every couple of years because my family is
  • interested in and
  • anyway the thing that was frustrating it's an old phone
  • and a new phone I can't use no pigs because there's one
  • measurement the camera just off by a millimeter it's so go
  • places and fit the basic dimensions of a full member
  • saying suddenly the details aren't so considering how to
  • design products so that way we're not creating more jobs to
  • be processed and recycled.
  • So another example of last lesson so I guess it's my old
  • MacBook words from 2017. And became unable to be updated, but
  • I couldn't get the latest version of Java system installed
  • on the laptop because it didn't have the minimum requirements
  • anyone have experience with that as it goes or Mac
  • Moore's Law Section right
  • the same more, more or more.
  • I guess the way it goes is that every, whatever 18 months, you
  • double your computing power or something. And so over the
  • course of five years, you're gonna have 32 times more power,
  • I guess.
  • But yeah, essentially your old computer gets exponentially
  • slower. So they have been cut off at some point because
  • they're trying to program for their new machines.
  • So, how many people have switch their computers to Linux instead
  • of Windows or Mac OS hello people are here anyone else
  • that being a sustainable practitioner
  • So, what about supporting open source projects more generally
  • is that an aspect of sustainability
  • of supporting sustainable alternatives
  • this side of the room many discussions to share for me the
  • sessions about being sustainable practitioner in information
  • technology a lot of environmental impact happens at
  • the level of corporate organizations so, senior
  • practitioners inside of the software
  • so I'm paraphrasing a little bit but of course within industry to
  • change the culture
  • okay anyone else
  • this is a safe space
  • safe space to consume camera and I hope I asked you to do that as
  • well
  • anyway, I'm not going to twist arms just have a mental picture
  • of me going down the aisles and twisting arms
  • anyway
  • so I heard about this organization on the podcast What
  • on earth? And CDC? We're talking about
  • raising climate stories into film. So they did a test that we
  • had the film was heard today by this current film set on Earth.
  • Is was there a mention about climate change? And so they
  • tested the Oscar nominated films. And for me, is one of the
  • paths because there's a reference to
  • film killing the planet. So that was a way to raise the issue to
  • movie did anyone watch the Oscars on Sunday night?
  • Ryan Gosling and number boys seeing the clip
  • we're working. I'm going to show you this first. So the question
  • is to think about, can we do something like this to help
  • people raise the profile of sustainability in computing?
  • And I'm certainly going to be through in 10 years, it's been
  • just so hoarse from our lives climate. I mean, shooting
  • burglar everyday conversation, right, good
  • energy strives to inspire courage to face Crisis. They
  • will also provide tools and support for those brave enough
  • to tell these essential stories.
  • We're here tonight to ensure that we are reframing the
  • climate crisis in a way that people are at the center of the
  • shore, especially black and brown, and did this and our
  • mission is to inspire, support and accelerate stories in
  • scripted television that reflect the world that we live in now
  • and help imagine a better future, but we're missing the
  • stories that can help us navigate it. The purpose of the
  • playbook is to change that. We wrote the playbook to help
  • explore the endless ways the climate crisis can be portrayed
  • on screen, from casual admissions to using climate as
  • character drive. In fact,
  • USC analyzed over 37,000 stretch from 2016 to 2020, and found
  • that only 1046 That's 2.8% of the scripts included any climate
  • change towards 2.8%. staggeringly low,
  • acknowledging the climate crisis in our stories will help
  • audiences process their own difficult emotions. We need to
  • talk about it in our stories so that we can talk about it in a
  • real way. And the most important thing that you can do for the
  • climate is to write a damn good story, because
  • every story right now, that stuff climate change, stories
  • shape our society, they shape our policies, and they have the
  • potential to make the impossible. Feel tangible. This
  • playbook is a tool extender provides you with the
  • inspiration or guidance that you need to write powerful clients
  • towards climate change is an unprecedented challenge and
  • surviving and thriving will require unprecedented
  • creativity. This is probably one role of a lifetime.
  • You wouldn't recognize Bill Nye the Science Guy
  • Okay,
  • Saved My Life So?
  • Evening Right What is sustainability pink sparkles
  • anyway any other requests video
  • So Barbie passed the test this year when they were talking
  • about climate related mentions
  • so are this just ideas to do something similar in computing
  • so that we can raise the profile of these issues
  • what is EDI stands for
  • know Ed or I could say and we'll fill it out
  • counting the number of blacks in the board
  • so I don't spend all the time doing a six letter word sorry II
  • end and
  • alternative information
  • use last
  • Hi
  • up what is that birthday what is
  • diversity inclusions
  • yes this is
  • I'll take social metrics 400
  • Thanks for playing over there
  • okay so what does that do diversity and inclusion has to
  • do with sustainability
  • We're designing software and systems and we're making made
  • sure to design the most vulnerable but also so that
  • we're thinking about our population of users or
  • stakeholders as being the entire population so when you think
  • about designing software
  • think about it in terms of inclusion not integration or
  • segregation or exclusion
  • right so maybe you can say manage
  • separately so we're not leaving particular group might be
  • underrepresented so we focus on making sure that everyone's
  • representative and so don't leave somebody else to
  • consideration
  • so thinking about going back to Planned Obsolescence many laptop
  • has one one terabyte of disk space solid state disk so I
  • think Sure, I can create files that are gigabytes large because
  • I can have a terribly if I thought like that too much I
  • wouldn't have much left on my desk
  • so as we're getting more and more capabilities
  • are demands on the increase. So in computer graphics sleeves,
  • this is not just an example whatever the heart, you say,
  • whatever the hardware rendering a high quality image so the
  • capability of computers have grown a great deal over the
  • years, but the algorithms become more sophisticated and realistic
  • as an example so
  • another example of cars and say cruise control systems lets you
  • drive more quickly steering capabilities in cars and make
  • them safe for the officer that is that you can drive real
  • quickly.
  • So, you may not realize the safety benefits because as much
  • as you do otherwise, because people are pushing the limits
  • so maybe we need to think about when is when things are enough
  • session on how to reduce instead of more Save
  • as much as possible with the pay bills we have now
  • I just said it's
  • again
  • okay
  • so, one can 115 I guess if you can could there be more focus on
  • resources so, you're thinking about using things efficiently
  • and you're writing code
  • not just those class with other ones
  • I think it was a few lessons proper data types and do not use
  • up all your storage which kind of complicated
  • so, we have this question
  • could you see us classes
  • so, maybe think about the higher level classes
  • so, it used to be the garbage collection and so on was the
  • topic that programmers have to be more concerned about. But
  • now, some of those details are hidden to handle the black
  • language environment
  • anyone want to have a lot of thought about ways to increase
  • the profile sustainability in CS classes here
  • more or less can draw complete PDF
  • so, the question is so can we read information that's out
  • computing is a more sustainable alternative.
  • Okay another time I guess great
  • to see
  • Take care

Responses

What important concept or perspective did you encounter today?

  • Today I learnt about sustainability in computing professions.
  • what DEI stands for: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion
  • not really
  • All of the discussed topics today
  • The most important topic i encountered today was how important diversity is to technology. Diversity and inclusion are important due to innovation and ethical reasons
  • Regarding inclusion, diversity, and equity and how these concepts help design for the most vulnerable user.
  • we learned that equity, inclusion and diversity is what helps us create sustainability for technology
  • inclusion, diversity and equity in information technology.
  • Sustainability for a professional
  • Today I encountered the concept of sustainability. We discussed what it means to be a sustainable practitioner or profession
  • we learned equity, inclusion and diversity because its part of the code of ethics to create technology for the most vulnerable person
  • Sustainability in computing
  • everyting
  • importance of equity, diversity and inclusion for sustainability for technology was a significant perspective i have encountered today.
  • How the film industry need to do more by incorporating green energy/climate change issues into their story line in movies.
  • Got to know about the good energy stories which raises awareness about the climate change in movies.
  • equity
  • about good energy
  • Today we talked about the midterm grades, quizzes, etc
  • busers are using technology, like e-transfers, to continue their abuse, stressing the importance of banks and police taking action to stop this kind of violence.
  • I learned that equity, inclusion and diversity helps us create sustainability for technology as it helps us keep in mind to create technologies for the most vulnerable person.
  • Use of equity in ethics
  • While talking with my group about sustainability, we sparked up a conversation about NFTs and how they were very popular a few years ago. I thought it was interesting because we both understood what made NFTs appealing while also acknowledge the harm they can have on the environment just to produce and maintain.
  • An important point was how planned obsolescence is an unsustainable practice for tech professionals. And that I’m just Ken
  • equity, inclusion and diversity
  • I encountered new perspectives about environmental impact and sustainability in the information tech world. There are many ways that the world can improve the outlook on sustainable tech.
  • I found the concept of diversity interesting, I think it was cool to see how it was related to something that’s big in the media such as the Barbie movie.
  • Midterm
  • Nothing
  • Always being watched
  • Sustainability as a computer professional
  • Midterm result
  • Today I encountered the concept of equality, diversity, and inclusion, as it relates to current world technology.
  • An important perspective I encountered today was perspective that Dr. Hepting said about using resources sustainably. The analogy he used was if you use a GB for each project but you have a TB of space your space will fill up quite quickly and is not sustainably long term. It gave me the perspective to try and allocate resources effectively for my projects I can be a sustainable computer professional and help contribute to a more sustainable future for computing.
  • not really
  • No
  • sustainability
  • the camera is always on not only during the exams
  • The concepts were pretty interesting
  • equity, inclusion and diversity
  • sutainability
  • Important topic was about midterm and other small topic about course
  • I've come to understand that fostering equity, inclusion, and diversity is pivotal for ensuring the sustainability of technology.
  • the idea of sustainability being important in the sense that if we want to continue to work with great technology, we need find a way to preserve it.
  • Today we talked about Sustainability, I think it is very important for computer science because we should have it in mind when coding! we should be making sure that our coding is sustainable for the future by making code modular, updating it regularly, documentation to name a few ways to keep our code sustainable and easier to use in the future.
  • midtim exam
  • I learned more about how ethics are deeply interrelated with Computer Science
  • The idea of sustainability in technology
  • Sustainability, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion)
  • We learnt about how the cameras arent only rolling when the exams are taking place but they are in general always recording.
  • I learned that the cameras in the lecture theatre are always on which may make some students uncomfortable
  • We had a group discussion about how to be sustainable and we learned a new acronym EDI. Equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • What it means to be a sustainable professional
  • We discussed about cameras and dioscussed about midterm grades and how the paper has been checked
  • I learnt about Sustanability and learnt from the videos played in class.
  • The movie lol
  • equity, inclusion and diversity is what helps us create sustainability for technology
  • It was about concepts of ethics and some more in depth sources
  • The important about today's class is midterm grades I think.
  • Some more detail knowledge about youtube
  • we watched an informational video about risk of internet
  • Today we learned about sustainability and how it can be used for professional ethics.
  • Today, we talked about sustainability, and we also talked about how we can be sustainable in our professions. We also discussed movies that promoted sustainability, including Barbie.
  • Today we discussed the topic of sustainabillity and addressing climate in tech/computer science. We talked about planned obsolescence and discussed what it means to be a sustainable practitioner. One important idea was the question of "How can we incorperate sustainabillity or address climate in other CS classes?".
  • Today the midterm results were announced
  • An important concept I have discovered today was how we need to make computer science classes teach more about efficiency and sustainability.
  • Today i learned about sustanability and sustainability issues
  • Youtube and stuff
  • There was not important concept did I encounter today
  • surveillance capitalism
  • Quality of risks in day to day life
  • how to push climatic concerns regarding computing into main stream
  • Today's meeting consisted of going over the UR Policies, the idea of sustainability and avoiding planned obsolescence, Moore's law, Ryan Gosling's performance at the Oscars, and EDI hangman. I think the most valuable topic we went over today is the idea of sustainability and how we can apply it as computing professionals. We were asked if our CS classes could put a bigger emphasis on sustainability and I think it is most definitely a concept that has not posed as much of an issue before, but could be.
  • Review some questions
  • About
  • That the cameras in the classroom are always recording
  • Equity, inclusion and diversity is what helps us create sustainability for technology and also part of the code of ethics to create technology for the most vulnerable person
  • who is ken
  • Being a sutainable profession or practitioner
  • No
  • equity ,inclusion and diversity
  • the camera is always watching
  • Today we talked about the cameras in class and our security. Also we watched Ryan gosling.
  • equity, inclusion and diversity
  • Efforts never go waste
  • the camera is always watching
  • a couple important concept we encountered today was equity, inclusion, and diversity. how they create sustainability for technology and how they are part of the code of ethics in creating technology for vulnerable people. An example we talked about in class was Barbie and how it promotes feminism. A question the lecture left us on was what can we do to promote a cause like what the Barbie movie did.
  • the camera is always watching
  • part of the code of ethics is to create technology for the most vulnerable people
  • The concept of sustainability is really worth paying attention to. In today's world, marketing companies do not give enough thoughts to their products regarding sustainability.
  • An important perspective I encountered today was sustainability and how we can implement it into software as well.
  • I'm just Ken was the highlight of my day. Ryan Gosling is what the world needs in todays day and age
  • learned about equity, inclusion and diversity and its usage in code of ethics to create technology for the most vulnerable person
  • Today I was impressed by raising the polite of sustainable issues
  • Sustainability.
  • Equity and Diversity are important because we have ethical obligation to provide technologies
  • -
  • The Oscar's video
  • nothing much important
  • I got to know about what does sustainability mean as a professional .
  • Cameras are everywhere and its kind of scary to think that in the future we might not have an option but to have all our data out in public.
  • The concept of sustainability, programmers should be concerned with the efficiency and waste of how they practice and work. Sustainable programmers ensure the safety and longevity of information society
  • .
  • Equity, inclusion, and diversity is what helps make technology sustainable (just like Barbie)
  • we learnt more about the topic discussed in previous lectures
  • Today’s lecture was interesting….
  • theme
  • That the cameras in CL 110 are on all the time and the sign under it is very misleading.
  • I encounter about the AI pros and cons while discussing in our groups.
  • we watched Oscars and ryan gosling performance video
  • Today was pretty exciting class, we watched Ryan Goslings performance.
  • Nope
  • more knowledge about the topics of last class
  • Midterm grades
  • An important perspective I learned today was the importance in sustainability in our future's technology. We learned this through watching Barbie and realized that Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is the key to further progressing technology for most especially the most vulnerable person.
  • The importance of ethics
  • Cips visit on 21
  • History
  • I learned that equity, inclusion and diversity is what helps us create sustainability for technology
  • I learned about EDI (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) and its impact in computing (specifically the code of ethics).
  • lots of
  • The important topic that was discussed was about sustainability and issues related to that.
  • Today I learned that we use equity, inclusion and diversity because its part of the code of ethics to create technology for the most vulnerable person
  • An important concept I encountered today was the acronym EDI, which stands for equity, diversity, and inclusion. This acronym is a conceptual framework that helps to foster sustainability for the information society. It also helps us devise balanced technologies for those with vulernabilites.

Was there anything today about which you would like to know more?

  • I would like to know how we can apply sustainability in the field of computer science.
  • Sustainability

  • I'd like to learn more about how our personal ethics can be improved so we prioritize the lives and well being of others rather than our own goals
  • I liked the relation between current day movies and equity and diversity, I would like to further this talking point and consider how past movies and media helped further the lack of diversity we saw in the past.
  • what principles or guidelines to follow when developing technology in order to be sustainable consistently
  • More ways to do something about sustainabilty issues in the computer science field (such as abstraction).
